This was not as heartbreaking as the end of season 2, but then again, it wasn't nearly so final. I don't mind. I'm sad Martha's departing, but I gather we'll see her again, and I appreciate that they didn't just repeat Rose's story, as it would have cheapened both characters to do so. As it is, she was kickass in every respect.
Loved having Jack back. Loved having the slightly goofy, cheerful Doctor Who-version of Jack back. I do enjoy Torchwood!Jack: Now With Angst! but there's no denying that the cheesier interpretation plays more to John Barrowman's strengths and Tennant and Barrowman are wow so fun together (I've been looking forward to seeing that all season, seriously).
I already knew how it was going to play out, but when The Doctor told Jack he really didn't mind the immortality thing, and Jack could travel with him, and Jack turned him down--turned him down for Torchwood--I could have screamed. Screw Torchwood! Screw the next Companion! I want to see Ten, Martha, and Jack romping around the universe for a few seasons. Or even just Ten and Jack, for a change of pace--that scene in Utopia in the radiation-filled room freakin' melted me, by the way--they're funny together, and I really, really enjoy watching The Doctor call Jack on his two most notable traits: flirting with everything willing, and shooting at everything hostile.
