Starship Operators 2
Feb. 24th, 2005 03:51 pmAgain with the evil. This really feels like a satire of the highest order; I wonder how coincidental the timing is. Were the novels this is based on written in reaction to some of the trends in the world today, or was the author just good at predicting human behavior?
Purely dramatic speculation: I wonder how much Shinon knows. Her own comments suggest she's simply an intelligent, sensitive person caught up in this twisted story, but the blond chick seems to think that Shinon is also in the know (what know, you ask? well, even we don't know). And she has a good point--why didn't Shinon get off the ship? There's no obvious reason for it. She had the opportunity, if she's in love with anybody, she's done a good job of hiding it from everybody, she didn't want to become a career soldier, and she doesn't seem to be passionate about fighting the Kingdom--so why stick around for this insanity? I think there's a lot going on we don't know yet, and it may have to do with...um, that guy. I forget his name. The one who was actually an officer.
Anyway, Shinon is an interesting person, a good protagonist, and the other good reason to watch the show. I like her a lot.
I really hope this show lives up to the promise of these first two episodes, and I hope I'm not giving the creators too much credit, or reading too much into the concept. Right now, I think this is really smart, understated drama, maybe one of the smartest things I've seen since Planetes.
