cerusee: a white redheaded girl in a classroom sitting by the window chewing on a pencil and looking bored (Default)
Every time I see someone make some bizarrely unqualified statement like, "Netcomics does a good job with their releases," or write a review Pine Kiss without once touching on the quality of the translation, I'm left to assume they're either being paid oodles of money to shill for Netcomics, or they like the sweet trim and the pretty pretty pictures so very much that they never quite got around to reading the actual words in the bubbles. Netcomics translations range from "barely passable," to "I was enraged to have given them money for such hack work."

I mean, people like to take digs at the crappy translation on VIZ's Godchild, but at least when when reading that one, I have reason to believe that it was written by a live, human, speaker of English, and not by fucking Babelfish. The metaphors may be florid and the phrasing, awkward, yet still, there is some reasonable approximation of normal English syntax.

On another, incoherent, manga-related note, I've been enjoying sifting through the essays in the old shoujo issue of The Comics Journal, except for the one that argued that Chobits and Love Hina are really shoujo manga because women make babies and any man who wouldn't fuck a beautiful, retarded girl is an impossible feminine fantasy. What now? [edit: I now realize that was Dirk Deppey's piece. Oh Dirk. You are giving me a John Ringo moment. You're normally so in touch with reality. What happened?]
