Robbie Williams & Madonna
Mar. 10th, 2008 10:48 pmThis may sound a little weird, but I think I've finally figured out what people see in Madonna.* I've been listening to Robbie Williams--awesome music, by the way, he seems to be one of those performers who can do practically anything--and when I was looking at the video for She's Madonna** on Youtube, I noticed an altered fan version of the video with soundless clips from one of Madonna's concert performances. She's dressed in a white suit, similar to the one Williams wears in the original She's Madonna video, and though I couldn't hear her voice or music, I was awestruck with the sheer energy of her performance. She's amazing!
I've seen Madonna's enduring success described as coming from an ability to reinvent herself every five minutes, which when you think about it, is actually pretty impressive--to be able to read the national psyche well enough to be able to produce a new image of mass appeal, not once, but year after year after year, and to bring that level of intensity to each new version of her image...wow. There's a kind of talent in that entirely separate from singing or dancing ability. She can sing, and she can dance, and she can use sex to sell herself, but so can a lot of people who are given a shot at national exposure, not many of them can pull off a career spanning three decades.
*Look, I was under ten years old for the entirety of the '80s, and in the '90s, I still only listened to Bach and the Beatles. I was a late bloomer, okay?
**Consisting of a fake interview with Williams pretending to be a transvestite with MPD, intercut with scenes of Williams changing into a lounge suit and performing the song in a club full of sneering tranvestites. It's actually pretty cool. Stop laughing at me! It is!
