Better.
Much better.
In fact, if every episode from now on followed the model of either of these, I would be very pleased.
Now that was a succesful fusion of the soldier drama and the romantic school comedy. It was one of the funniest moments in all of the FMP I've seen or read to date, Fumoffu included. Everything about it was perfect--Mao's wild joy at finding the bazooka, the hostage's repeated attempts to look up her dress, Sousuke simultaneously carrying on on a subtext-laden conversation about exams with Kaname while driving a getaway car, the looks on Kurz's and Mao's faces when they'd downed their pursuers, and Kaname's quick, subtle changes of mood throughout the whole scene. Beautiful.
Aside from the amusing salon scene, this episode wasn't very funny. But it was romantic as anything. The sheer...intimacy...in the hair-cutting scene would delight anybody who likes the relationship between Kaname and Sousuke. The contrast between Sousuke's paranoia in the salon and his comfort around Kaname made it pretty clear how strongly he feels about her; her gentleness as she touched him told us the same thing about her. "You're the only one I trust." ...♥
Aaaaaand, then the drama of Things Going Wrong. Sousuke punching the latptop when he reads his orders. Yes. Dear god, yes. Be still my heart.
(Minor plot spoilers and major scene spoilers under the cuts.)
