I don't think that he's not--I'm just preparing myself for potential disappointment. (The sibling relationship in Mai-HiME is one of the great joys of the show for me, so I'm going to feel strongly about whatever they end up doing with it here.) You're probably right, though--the cast of characters is fairly tightly interwoven, so I'm sure there's a way for Mai and Takumi to be related and not be in each other's presence.
This possible take on a Takumi/Akira relationship rocks my socks, and I hope it is so.

Yeah. I strongly suspect that Mai's plot function is going to be more akin to "wild card" than "tragic loss." In the original show she was, practically speaking, a pacifist. Since most of the characters' essential personality elements have been preserved, if in some cases redirected--Mashiro is the notable exception--I'm curious to know if the Mai who attended an elite fighting school is also a pacifist.
