cerusee: a white redheaded girl in a classroom sitting by the window chewing on a pencil and looking bored (mai)

--I'd forgotten how action-packed this show is. And yes, yes, they knew exactly where they were going from the beginning. Now that I know the plot, I can see that. It's so busy. It doesn't feel rushed, but everything that isn't funny is either character development or laying out the plot. And half the funny is related to character development or plot, anyway.

--There is like, no good stopping place. I only stopped at two because I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open.

--I like Takumi a lot more the second time around. Not that there was ever much to dislike (besides his bizarrely deep voice), except that he's a very mild kid. The voice no longer grates, and...fuck, Mai loves her brother with all her heart. And Takumi loves his sister. So I have to love Takumi. In fact, I love everybody. Except Shiho. NO POWER ON THIS EARTH CAN MAKE ME LOVE SHIHO.

--I forgot what I was going to say.

--There is more voice talent in this show than, like, any six American dubs you can name except for Johnny Yong Bosch, and I will hear nothing against him, because he's my English VA boyfriend, so there.

Aha! These are exactly the episodes of Mai-HiME I've actually seen, and I was really, really impressed with the story, pacing, characters, absolutely everything except the (evidently mandatory) Love Hina style boob slapstick, so if you're going to be rewatching them then I'm going to start watching it properly as of now because I <3 your commentaries.

One thing though - who is Johnny Yong Bosch? *shot*

The ecchi humor continues through about three-fifths of the show, but most of it is a lot funnier than the stuff in the first couple of episodes--or at least it was to me. Once people's characters are established, they can make jokes slightly less generic than "guy falls on busty girl's boobs and she screams."

Accidentally-falling-on-the-boobs is always low class, but there are ways of playing that sort of scene that are genuinely funny. I'd describe a couple, except that I found them so hilarious that I'm reluctant to spoil the jokes by describing them. There's also plenty of non-boob related humor, too.

As Mikke said, Bosch is the guy who did the English voice for Vash. Trigun was one of the first anime series Mikke and I had ever watched, and of course we watched it dubbed. Later on, when I turned into a total sub snob, I was afraid to go back and watch dubs that I'd loved before--but while the Trigun dub suffers from a lot of the usual crap, Vash is still wonderful.
