Avatar: the Last Airbender eeeeeeeeee
Aug. 27th, 2006 06:07 pmI have a VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT.
It turns out that Avatar: The Last Airbender is seven shades of AWESOME. I am two episodes in and enthralled.
Thank you, everyone on my flist who's previously enthused about this, for bringing it to my attention. And thank you Nickolodean, for reminding me once again that American animation doesn't have to suck.
...
I have a vague yearning to make a post about CMX and Paul Levitz and that whole censorship debacle, and why I am no longer boycotting CMX. The gist of it, however, is probably this: any publisher that brings me a quiet gem like Omukae Desu is doing something right. And as long as CMX was putting out Land of the Blindfolded, there was no chance I was going to actually stick to my boycott, anyway. As long as they refrain from butchering things in the future, I am willing to forgive them all their past sins and generally unimpressive paper quality for their excellent title selection.
...
I have a question, for anyone who knows more about publishing and manga in general than I.
A week or two ago, I had a middle-aged white male customer inquire about the display of Naruto titles behind my register (it was the display for the store's graphic novel club, of which I am the co-host). He decided to buy the first volume, and explained that he was curious about this whole manga thing, because he worked in the sales department of Houghton Mifflin, and he remembered seeing impressive sales numbers for the sale of some manga or graphic novel published by the company cross his desk, but also hearing that it had been a controversial title because it was racy.
I have no idea what he's talking about. I don't think I misunderstood him; he was fairly precise about it, and I know he said he worked at Houghton Mifflin. But Houghton Mifflin mainly does educational materials, and if they own any kind of manga or graphic novel publishing imprint, neither I nor any person I've asked at the bookstore has been able to identify it. Does anybody know what he might have been talking about?
