Why does such a funny show make me want to cry?
Mikan's a grade-A shoujo heroine: no matter how much crap and injustice is dumped on her, she musters on with a smile on her face (briefly punctuated by grimaces of horror). This is a weird, crazy, crackish show, but somehow, somehow, it pulls itself together enough to work for me. I think a lot of it is the real, albeit bizarre, friendship between Mikan and Hotaru that gives Mikan's bad decisions and endless determination such poignancy. After all, she's doing all of this for Hotaru. And Hotaru knows it.
