(After reading The Secret Wedding, I waxed ecstatic to several people about how the newly-discovered-for-me Beverly is the closest thing to reading Georgette Heyer Regencies I'd found yet. After reading An Unsuitable Man and Dangerous Joy, then going to visit my parents in Austin and reading a couple more Heyer romances and mysteries, I have to take back the comparison--Beverly's one of the better romance novelists I've run across, but Heyer's pedestal sits higher still, and Beverly's really not close at all.

The Secret Wedding was pretty awesome in terms of plotting, pacing, prose, sexiness and characterization, and I was impressed by her ability to address modern feminist perspectives and concerns--rape, women's general lack of independence, agency, and financial power in 19th century England, etc--in a way that was not jarring or ahistorical. She did what I thought was an pretty good job of balancing romantic fantasy and historical reality. I could have lived without the cute magic animal, but it was also less intrusive and ridiculous here than in Dangerous Joy.

Dangerous Joy and An Unsuitable Man are among the better genre romances I've read--I haven't read that many, except for Heyer, who really is in a class by herself--but didn't live up to the high expectations I had of Beverly after The Secret Wedding. C'est la vie. I'll continue to look for books by her to read, since if a lesser book by Beverly isn't necessarily better than 90% of everything else out there, it's still a decent read, and her better books are pretty damn good.)


Heyer, Georgette: These Old Shades
(the best part about reading this was how my mother, who probably hasn't read it in years, could still remember the names and roles of all the characters in it, and could recall the context of every little bit that I read aloud. I know I can't do that for many prolific genre authors who primarily write stand-alone works with no carryover characters. I can't even remember the names of most of the protagonists unless they're in the title).

(words cannot express how much I adore the Shogun. Holy shit, man. I like Yoshinaga's male characters just fine, but if she decided to write nothing but female characters from now on, I would have no complaints).

Christie, Agatha: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
(sadly, I guessed in thirty pages in. By my generation, the stuff you need to think of the possibilities required to guess this one are pretty common. But it's really good anyway, and unlike And Then There Were None, I think this one doesn't cheat).


Graphic novels:

Rodionoff, Hans with Keith Giffen, authors, Enrique Breccia, artist: Lovecraft
(a strikingly illustrated blithering mess of a story).

Weir, Christina and Nunzio DeFilippis, authors., Christopher Mitten, artist: Past Lies: An Amy Devlin Mystery
(I like the art. I did think of manga, not because it's stylistically manga-influenced in any way, but because it possesses a quality I see in manga more often than American comics art, which is great use of the clarity black and white line art can have. There's plenty of grey, but Mitten knows how to use it without fucking up. I guess the simplest way to describe the art is, "easy on the eyes and very effective at conveying the narrative." You learn not to take that for granted in comics, after a while... The plot is nothing special, but readable; I liked Amy Devlin a lot and would happily read more books with her as the protagonist, especially if they were graphic novels with art by Mitten).


Manga:

Ito, Junji: Uzumaki vols 1-2
(still creepy as fuck).

Koike, Kazuo, author, and Kazuo Kamimura, artist: Lady Snow Blood vol. 1
(oh wow, that 1970s manga art, how I dig it. It's a visual feast and great comic art. It's a visual feast of naked women stabbing things and having sex--no, let me make that, "being had sex with"--and blood sprays, frequently all at the same time, but damn, it's stylish. The story is...eh, a revenge plot. I don't really care. It's just there to provide an excuse for fantastic art containing all the elements the creators really liked to use, i.e. naked women being had sex with and killing things and blood spatters. Those elements are not particularly appealing to me, but good 1970s manga art is).

This everything I can remember reading since...oh, March or maybe a little before? Probably no earlier than February. I jogged my memory by looking at my bookshelves; if it was from a library, or elsewhere borrowed, I may have forgotten about it. I borrow more novels/prose/nonfiction than I buy, so this list is a little slanted towards comics and graphic novels, which I buy more often, because less of what I want to read is available from the library in a regular and timely fashion.

It's also slanted towards comics and graphic novels because I read a lot more of them.

School-related/academic reading: uncounted multitudes.
Poetry: like you care.
