Tsunade: GRRRR.
Naruto: GRRRRRRR.
Tsunade: GRRRRRRRRR.
Naruto: I never hit a lady, but I'm gonna punch you in the mouth.
Tsunade: Wanna take it outside, little boy?
Naruto: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Tsunade: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Naruto: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Tsunade: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Naruto: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Tsunade: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
Naruto: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrr.......
Tsunade: You lose!

~edit~ Hah hah, I suck. I'm rewriting this so it's actually funny. I shouldn't try to write jokes when I'm tired.

Naruto: I can master the Rasengan in three days!
Tsunade: Wanna bet?!
Naruto: Okay.
Tsunade: If I win, you have to give me all your money.
Naruto: And if I win?
Tsunade: I'll give you this necklace that'll kill you.

I LOVE TSUNADE! <3

... also, this means you saw the episode that made me want to smack Jiraiya.

The episode with the kid? Where Naruto's angsting about not having a daddy and Jiraiya so CLEARLY wants to try but is being hard because he knows Naruto needs to be able to stand on his own? Yeah, I wasn't happy with Jiraiya there. (but the entire Tsunade arc is one emotional roller-coaster, IMO)

Yes, that one. I call it the popsicle episode. Jiraiya sorta manages to redeem himself at the end (behold the popsicle symbolism!) but it still doesn't make up totally for watching Naruto's "happy" facade TOTALLY crumble. I nearly CRIED when I saw his face and then he says that he's okay and grins like normal.

And Jiraiya keeps telling him not to ask for attention like a kid. Dude! I know they're all ninjas, but...Naruto is a kid.

About the only thing that kept me from getting really pissed off was that Jiraiya was probably right that Naruto needed to figure the technique out on his own--that it was one of those things where you have to learn by doing, and you'd lose out if someone just told you the trick. But still--he couldn't take a day or two for some quality time when Naruto practically begged him? Boo.

Overall, though, I really enjoyed the training/traveling episodes. Lots of cute. The Tsunade episodes are less fun, because Tsunade's so messed up.

*nodnodnods* Naruto is showing himself to be brilliant in his own way.

But Jiraiya... *sighs* I have issues with Jiraiya, sometimes. In general I like him. But it was SO obvious that Naruto wanted... just a little more attention, you know? Finally, here's someone who WANTS him and wants to TRAIN him (because Jiraiya chose him and all), which is totally the opposite of the Kakashi thing. But then when Naruto is treated coldly, or shunted off by a person who WANTS him, it makes him hurt more.

Naruto also has an expression that kills me more than the popsicle episode one, but it's not until after they get back to Konoha.

Naruto wants Jiraiya to be a dad, but Jiraiya's drawing the line between 'sensei' and 'dad' and not stepping over it - maybe because when you're training people to fight and possibly die, you can't be a dad, because it'll tear you apart when your son dies.

That's how I read it. Doesn't make it hurt any less, of course, but it takes Jiraiya from being cold-hearted to someone who understands that if *he* falls apart because Naruto dies, he can't train the next prodigy to come along. Good teachers are more valuable than good fighters, especially when they're on a wartime footing.

Mmm. I guess. I think there's a bit more flexibility in a teacher-student relationship than that, but...

...well, even people who are in their fifties sometimes make mistakes despite having good intentions.

*nods* I don't know if Naruto was looking for a "dad" per se, but definitely he wanted to be around Jiraiya more. I mean, come ON. He practically begged and even said Jiraiya could sleep or whatever. Naruto just wanted a physical presence around him.

;__;

;_; indeed.

this is why Jiraiya's gonna end up in a nursing home and Naruto will never ever write or call or visit.

Naruto will send a Christmas card. And make sure Jiraiya gets extra pudding on his birthday.

This is where my issues with Jiraiya come from, actually. Because if that's true, it's because Jiraiya doesn't want to have the pain of losing another student, when his last student -- the one he loved like a father -- was Yondaime. I really really REALLY don't want to find out that Jiraiya's interest in Naruto stems from the fact that Naruto resembles (or is the son of) Yondaime. Because if that's true, Jiraiya is trying to "recapture his past" in a way that's different from what Orochimaru and Tsunade do, but just as harmful.

Naruto would feel even LESS of himself if he found out something like that; I mean, really, if people see him as Kyuubi, or they see him as Yondaime's son, then where is the chance for him to be Naruto? He'd be getting hits from both sides.

Not to mention the blatant Marty Stu-ness of her brother and boyfriend. Totally disposable, but they get enough exposure to irritate me. >_>

Ah? I rather liked Nawaki and Dan. ^^;; Nawaki mostly, though. He was cute until he, you know, croaked. And the stuff with Dan would traumatize anyone.

ehh. i'm with KR here. Nawaki was okay, but Dan was so "ohh, look how saintly i am, i'm going to be hokage except -- wait, i think i'll go and die now to create angst." also, I didn't like his hair. men with bad hair should die. XD

Okay, I agree about Dan's hair. That was just bad. But I think they get the short end of the stick because they only appear in one episode for a few minutes each. Maybe if they were around more, I would feel more connection.

Actually, maybe I like Nawaki more because I read a fic where it was implied that Orochimaru had something to do with his death. Rawr.

There's something about the way Orochimaru acts right before Tsunade goes to look at Nawaki's body that really made me wonder about that. Like, why exactly did he have Nawaki's necklace? One does not generally rob the dead with family coming to identify the body. Sure, it could just be because he's always been an evil creepy bastard who likes to hurt people, or it could be because he's always been an evil creepy bastard who killed Nawaki because he likes to hurt people.

*nodnods* There was just something so WRONG about that whole conversation between the Sannin and Nawaki being dead. Besides Orochimaru having the necklace, what he SAYS is suspicious. And you see Jiraiya give him a Look. I think by this time, Sarutobi was already questioning what Orochimaru was doing.

Is that why she's afraid of blood? Because when Dan died, she ended up soaked in his blood?

on 2005-05-03 05:48 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] windandwater.livejournal.com
*nods* Yup, that's the reason why. It sort of the combo of her being soaked in Dan's blood, and the fact that this is the second person who has died and she's sorta been the cause of death (by giving the necklace).

Well, they served their purpose, which was to establish that Tsunade has angst and that for her, meeting Naruto is like getting kicked repeatedly in the gut.

As of, um, episode 94, she's still in the trying-to-dislike-him-so-she-won't-get-attached-but-being-amazed-in-spite-of-herself stage.

But I can see how this is the foundation for a more affectionate relationship. Tsunade doesn't want to love anybody right now; she's been burned too much. It wouldn't be normal for her to immediately take to Naruto just because he's so like Nawaki--she's not reconciled to Nawaki's death, and a reminder of him is just going to hurt.

But Naruto is eminently lovable for himself. I expect Tsunade will probably come around. (Of course, everybody except me already knows anyway.)
